Wearing a butt plug can be an exciting prospect, and sometimes you might find yourself wanting to do it more and more. Or maybe you're a complete beginner and have no idea how long you're supposed to wear one for.
In this article we will detail the ins and outs of wearing plugs, for ten minutes or even ten hours!
2-3 HOURS: TYPICAL GUIDELINES
When trying to figure out how long you can wear your new best friend, the most obvious place to start is the manufacturer's recommendations. Some people also like to seek more "scientific" advice from health professionals.
Both of these parties tend to be rather conservative, because they don't want you to get hurt. They'll say something like:
“You should gradually wear your butt plug for longer periods of time. Start with a few minutes and as you become more comfortable, wear it for longer periods of time. Don’t wear a plug for more than about 2 to 3 hours.
In general, our advice here at Boudoir Nimois is the same. Indeed, the inside of your anus is a very sensitive area.
Putting pressure on your sphincter and the walls of your anus can reduce blood flow to all of these areas, which can lead to lesions or even ulcers. The inside of the rectum is also an area devoid of pain receptors, so sometimes even if something is wrong, you don't realize it.
Of course, manufacturers and doctors tend to be quite conservative in their advice. They don't want to be blamed if you get injured after all! A quick search online will reveal, however, that many users wear their plugs for much longer.
Again, we don't generally recommend this. But we think it's important to discuss what might happen and when you can and can't wear your plug.
CAN YOU WEAR YOUR ANAL PLUG WHILE YOU SLEEP?
The first question that always comes up is whether or not you can wear it while you sleep.
Again, you will find many stories of people who claim to wear their earplugs every night to bed. However, when you sleep at night, the pain receptors in your body turn off. This means that if something is wrong, you may not even know it until morning.
Plus, while you're sleeping, you'll be unconscious. You won't even feel the butt plug, and depending on its size, you won't even know it's there. Why take the risk when you can easily plug it back in when you wake up?
"We do not recommend wearing your anal plug while you sleep."
CAN YOU WEAR YOUR ANAL PLUG DURING PREGNANCY?
Another common concern about when you can wear butt plugs is whether or not you can use them while pregnant. Traditional sex itself can be quite uncomfortable, which is why some women turn to anal instead to satisfy their sexual desires.
So, can you use anal plugs during pregnancy?
"If it is a low-risk pregnancy and there are no health concerns, using anal plugs should be no problem."
The key here is the “low risk” part. There are several different things women can experience during pregnancy that may make using butt plugs inadvisable.
Most importantly, you should never use a butt plug if you have placenta previa. This is a condition in which the placenta sits much lower than normal in the uterus. By using a butt plug, you can damage the placenta, which can lead to heavy bleeding and damage. Most doctors recommend avoiding sexual activity completely if you have placenta previa.
More often than not, though, the main considerations will be things like constipation, hemorrhoids, or simple germs. While some women can use their plugs while suffering from these things and have no problems, for others it can make the situation worse.
The best advice is always to talk to your doctor. Be open and honest with them, they've seen it all before. If they say you won't have any problems using butt plugs, then go for it! But if they advise against it, you should always follow their advice.
CAN YOU KEEP YOUR PLUG ON WHILE USING THE BATHROOM?
Another common question is whether you can keep your outlet plugged in while using the toilet.
Half of this answer should be pretty obvious. You won't be able to poop if you're wearing a butt plug, so you should remove it.
However, when you just need to pee, you might wonder if you can leave it in.
“As a general rule, we recommend removing your butt plugs before going to the bathroom. It makes everything much easier.
While it is possible to pee while wearing your butt plug, this is a bit of a contradiction. To keep your plug in, you need to engage your pelvic floor muscles. But when you go to the bathroom, you need to relax those muscles to let the urine out.
It takes a ton of control to do both at the same time, and most likely you'll relax too much and the catch will fall out! Most of the time it's not a big deal, but fishing something out of your toilet is not the most pleasant experience.
If it's a metal or glass butt plug , dropping it this way could also damage both the toilet and the plug.
However, some people really don't want to remove their plug once they've plugged it in. If you absolutely must wear it while you pee, your best bet is to hold the base of the plug to make sure it doesn't fall out.
Be careful, however, not to push or force the urine out, as this can damage the pelvic floor muscles and lead to problems such as incontinence or urinary tract infections.
WEARING A BUT PLUG LONG TERM: MYTHS AND FACTS
While we always recommend that you only use your plugs for 2-3 hours at a time, we know that many people will ignore this advice and want to use them for much longer periods. As this is a topic that is generally avoided by manufacturers, stores, and health professionals, there is a lot of misinformation circulating.
So let's go through the different claims you might find online and determine which ones are facts and which ones are myths.
“YOU CAN ONLY WEAR A BUT PLUG FOR 2-3 HOURS.”
We'll start with the most common "myth," the one we've already mentioned several times. Despite the advice commonly touted online, you can wear your plugs for much longer than that.
Many enthusiasts around the world even keep theirs on for days or weeks at a time, or even try to live their lives completely plugged in.
If you're going to try these extended sessions, you need to pay close attention to your own body. We're all different, and you might find your limit at 3, 6, or even 9 hours. Once your muscles start to feel tired or you're feeling a little sore, it's best to take a break.
“YOU SHOULD GRADUALLY PROGRESS TOWARDS EXTENDED USE SESSIONS.”
Another statement you'll see frequently when trying to learn more about butt plugs, and this time it's true! The muscles you use to hold a plug inside your body are just like any other, they need to be trained.
You should start with shorter sessions and then gradually increase the duration until you are happy with how long you can wear your plug. It is important to also repeat this process if you change plugs, as the size may be different or it may be heavier than the previous one.
“WEARING A BUTTER PLUG FOR TOO LONG CAN BE FATAL.”
At the other end of the scale, we have some of the more outlandish claims that butt plugs are terrible. We can happily say that there is no evidence that long-term wear is any more dangerous than most other sexual activities.
You might see stories of “heavy anal bleeding” or “massive incontinence” caused by butt plugs, but this is all wildly out of proportion. As long as you keep yours clean, use lube, and take your time inserting it, you should have no problems.
“WEARING A BUT PLUG ALL DAY MAY CAUSE PAIN, DISCOMFORT OR ACHES.”
When you first start trying to wear your butt plugs for long periods of time, you may notice one or more of the three side effects above. While these aren’t terrible things that will cause permanent damage, they can be more than a little uncomfortable.
When you are experimenting with long term wear, you need to pay close attention to your body. These symptoms are signs that something is starting to cause problems and need to be addressed.
Most of the time, it simply means that the pelvic floor muscles have been strained for too long and need a good rest. Give yourself enough time between sessions of prolonged use, and over time, these muscles will become stronger and stronger and the symptoms will usually disappear.
“WEARING A BUT PLUG TOO LONG WILL LEAVE YOU WITH A GAPING ASSHOLE.”
While gaping is a sexual practice enjoyed by many people, it's not something that happens by chance. Gaping takes time, practice, and specific techniques. You're not going to induce it just by wearing a butt plug.
What you may notice is a very “slight gap,” where your anus feels more open than it did before you used your plug. This is completely normal, and within a few hours, your anus will usually return to its original state.
If the gaping opening is something you're interested in, check out our guide here!
“YOU CAN USE ANAL PLUGS TO PREPARE FOR ANAL SEX.”
As we mentioned above, using a butt plug for a while can produce a “slight gap” that opens the sphincters a little wider than normal. This effect carries over into the anal canal and is a great warm-up before anal sex.
When you notice this, it's usually a sign that all of your anal muscles have started to relax and get used to having something inside. You'll often find that using a plug before anal sex makes it much easier to insert a penis and much more comfortable when you do!
“YOU ONLY NEED TO USE LUBRICANT WHEN YOU INSERT YOUR ANAL PLUG.”
Lube is an extremely important part of any type of anal play, but during extended sessions it plays a much more important role.
No matter how slippery your chosen lube is, it will eventually dry out. Once that happens, things can get pretty uncomfortable down there, so it’s always a good tip to keep a bottle of lube handy during extended sessions. Any time you feel things starting to dry out, you should remove the cap and apply fresh lube.
“SOME LUBRICANTS ARE BEST TO WEAR ALL DAY.”
Not all lubricants are created equal, so the one you choose to use can change the experience you have when wearing your plugs all day.
In particular, silicone and oil-based lubricants are thicker and tend to last much longer. This means you have to reapply them less often, as they take longer to dry.
Remember though, if you are using a silicone butt plug , you cannot use silicone lube!
"YOU CANNOT WEAR A BUT PLUG IN PUBLIC"
When it comes to wearing your butt plugs when you’re out and about, there can be a number of reasons why people say you shouldn’t do it. Most commonly, the claims will be that the plug will fall out, or that they’ll be obvious and for everyone to see.
Both of these things depend entirely on the butt plug you are using. If you are having trouble keeping your butt plug in, you can try a different size, material, or even a harness to help keep it in place.
To make it less obvious that you're wearing a plug, you can get one with a T-shaped base. This fits discreetly between your buttocks, so no one will know it's there.
“WEARING A BUT PLUG FOR LONG TIMES MAKES YOU POO MORE.”
There’s a lot of truth to this one, as many people find that wearing butt plugs can actually help with constipation. Likewise, if you have a healthy gut, you may find that you need to go to the bathroom more often as you wear your plugs for longer and longer.
Of course, there's nothing wrong with that. Just use the bathroom when you need it!
TIPS FOR LONG-TERM WEARING A BUTTER PLUG
If you're planning on extending your use of butt plugs for longer periods of time, there are a few things you can do to make everything go a little smoother.
LUBRICATION
The first and most obvious consideration is to make sure you have plenty of lube. As we mentioned earlier, you don’t just want to apply lube when you insert your plug, but frequently while you’re wearing it. You want to make sure you always have some nearby when you’re wearing plugs for long periods of time.
It’s also important to think about the lubrication you use. Oil-based and silicone-based lubes are much thicker and therefore last much longer. This means you don’t need to reapply it as often!
There are even specific anal lubricants that you can purchase, such as EasyGlide Sensitive Anal Lubricant .
CHOOSE A PROPER PLUG
It’s also important to make sure you have the right type of butt plug for long-term wear. Simply choosing the right one can make all the difference in your experience.
While you can usually use fairly large plugs, when you plan on wearing one all day, you'll want something a little smaller. Wearing the largest you can will put a lot of pressure on your anal muscles and will tire you out quickly. Using something a little more comfortable will feel much better over time.
You should also consider what material your plug will be made of. Generally, we recommend silicone for longer periods of time, as it is the softest non-porous material you can buy.
One last consideration when wearing a plug for a long period of time is what you're going to do while you're wearing it. Something like a fox tail butt plug or a cat tail butt plug might seem like a fun idea at first, but if something happens and you have to go to the store or the office, you'll have to take it out or do a really good job of hiding it.
MAKE SURE YOUR SOCKET HAS A T-BASE
Likewise, making sure your butt plug has a T-shaped base can also make things a lot more comfortable. These plugs have a T-shaped base rather than the usual flared shape.
With a traditional base, it is very likely that after a few hours you will start to feel some irritation. It will also not be the most comfortable to sit on!
T-bases solve these problems. However, you will still eventually experience irritation when your lube dries, so be sure to reapply frequently.
TRY A HARNESS OR COMFORTABLE UNDERWEAR
Many people will find that moving around makes it harder to keep the butt plug inside your body. However, when you wear a butt plug for a long period of time, it is inevitable that you will need to move at some point.
To make it harder for your butt plugs to fall out, you can try a butt plug harness. These are similar to other sex toy harnesses you might find, wrapping around your waist and between your legs. They help keep a butt plug in place inside your body, requiring less effort from your anal muscles.
If you don't want to use a harness, you can always try to find some cute underwear to do the same thing. Obviously, things like thongs or baggy boxers won't help much, but briefs or tight panties can do the same job as a harness!
STAY SAFE WHEN USING ANAL PLUGS FOR A LONG PERIOD OF TIME!
While there are precautions you can take to make long-term butt plug wear a little safer, you still need to be very careful. This is not something Loveplugs and most other sex toy manufacturers or healthcare professionals recommend.
However, everyone's body is different, so if you think you can wear one for more than a few hours, try to remember our simple tips and pay special attention to your butt!
